Wolverine the baseball game
“Rosebud”
I recently read On Writing Well (is something different about these words already?). It’s full of great examples and anecdotes, and this one, on the final pages, moved me to not-quite-tears-but-moist-eyes.
(from On Writing Well, 30th Anniversary Edition)
My wolverine was a Nintendo 64 game: 007 Golden Eye that my boyhood friend owned. It had a split screen multiplayer mode (which apparently almost didn’t make it into the game) and we played it on many afternoons on a CRT TV in his loft room. I emailed him to make an appointment in a couple of decades, and to let him know that I was thinking of him (a habit I would like to develop). Will the N64 still turn on?
